The format of our afternoon is we usually begin with a few informative notices, then we listen, learn and laugh with our Speakers who cover a wide range of fascinating subject areas. An important part of our afternoon is when we then meet up in Park View Cafe. We have a free cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet and talk to new and old friends, all great fun!
June 2026

In June we had an excellent talk by Mark Butterworth on 'The Fascinating History of Lloyd's of London'. The talk described the founding of Edward Lloyd's Coffee House in the 1680s and how it became the Lloyd's of London world famous insurance business. It featured discussion on the quirkiness of the Lloyd's society, the role of 'Names' as underwriters, some unusual policies and of course the insurance of the Titanic.
May 2026
At our May meeting we welcomed artist Deb Hart who has run willow and basket weaving workshops all over the UK for the National Trust, English Heritage, and Royal Horticultural Society. She’s created willow art installations which you might have seen around Chelmsford - willow VE Day tanks, a willow Platinum Jubilee crown and willow peregrines in Oaklands Park. She created a garden structure just for us and we needed to find someone with a car big enough to transport it home. Luckily, we found one!
